Dr. James D. Fleck, C.C.

    James (Jim) D. Fleck is an accomplished entrepreneur, academic, and civil servant.  He founded Fleck Manufacturing in 1954 and sold the business to Noma Industries in 1994.  He has been on the boards of numerous companies including ATI (chair), Certicom, AMD Canada (chair), Alias Research (chair), CUC, Promis Systems, Rogers Mulitmedia, Zurich Insurance, Travellers Insurance, Channel 47, and Colonial Homes. 

    Jim has been on faculty at Harvard Business School, the Kennedy School of Government, the University of Toronto, Keio Business School, INSEAD, the University of Western Ontario, and York University. 

    In government, Jim was the Executive Director and a member of the Committee on Government Productivity, responsible for carrying out a study that led to a major re-organization of the Ontario Government.  He has also been Secretary of the Cabinet in Ontario and the Chief Executive Officer, Office of the Premier, Government of Ontario.  He has also served as Deputy Minister of Industry and Tourism, Government of Ontario.

    Jim is also actively engaged in community service and is currently chair of the board of the University of Toronto Schools, chair of Business for the Arts in Canada and interim chair of the Museum of History in Ottawa.  He has been on countless other board and volunteer initiatives.  Jim was also active in the Young Presidents' Organization and was its International President in 1972-73.

    He has been honoured with the Public Policy Forum Testimonial Dinner Award, the Edmund C. Bovey Award for leadership support of the arts, as well as the Queen's Silver, 50th, and Diamond Jubilee Medals.  He was appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada in 1997 and promoted to Companion of the Order of Canada in 2014.

    Jim has a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Western Ontario, a Doctorate in Business in Administration from Harvard Business School, a Doctor of Laws honoris causa from the University of Toronto and a Doctor of Sacred Laws honoris causa from Trinity College.
